2019 Draft Day 1 | Black & White

August 26, 2019

(slow, tense music) – When you pick at five, it
means you can’t screw up. (laughs) You can’t screw it up! No, I think it just means you’re gonna get a really good player. For us, we get a player
that’s gonna mean something to then take us to the next level. (intense music) A lot of people were going backwards and it was really hard last year. It wasn’t fun. You need to turn a page on that because if you keep talking about it, you’re gonna be that. So you need to turn a page and just say, “Okay, that’s it. “We had a bad year, let’s acknowledge it, “let’s move forward now. “How do we fix it?” (intense music) (crowd cheering and clapping) What was accomplished in this last decade has been absolutely incredible. But that being said, you
can’t just keep living into what was done, you
have to move forward. When we talk about, “We
need to start from zero, “we need to start from zero today. “And how can we get better from there?” It was the right thing
to do to trade away, we call them assets or players and/or draft picks, to try to win another
cup or to actually win the two cups that we won. But when you’re done with those runs, and it usually takes a few years, you gotta reload. – We haven’t had a pick in
this area in a long time and this is exciting for us. A lot of the fifth overall picks have become dynamite players. Look at Pettersson in Vancouver. Kessel, Carey Price, a goaltender. There’s a long list of guys who’ve been real
franchise changers really. (upbeat music) – [Commentator] Chicago
checks in at three, that’s a pivot point for the draft. Do they take the best defenseman
available in the draft?, in Bowen Byram? Or hometown Chicago boy, Alex Turcotte? Big decisions to be made at number three and we talked about New
York, Metropolitan New York. What about LA and Anaheim? – Well, here’s where it
gets interesting, right? – Yeah. – It’s a really good pick. Traditionally, it’s got
guys who’ve excelled. – We’re excited about the players and the grouping of players
that are in this area. Players that make players good. Players that make other players great. Those are the players that you can find at the top part of a draft. – Byram’s gone. – Byram’s off the board. Is he?
– Yep. So just to double check,
we’re drafting Turcotte. – Yes. – That’s how our team was built, through the draft. And that’s the way we’re
gonna be built moving forward. – The Los Angeles Kings
are proud to select, from the United States
Hockey League, Alex Turcotte. (crowd cheering) – Thank you so much, thank you. – Congratulations. – Thank you. – One thing when you go watch Alex play, that whole team that he plays on with the US Development
Program, what an elite team. They just score every night, they beat teams by five, six goals, there’s goals flying in everywhere. Alex, he’s team first guy. While that team was
doing all those things, Alex was still playing the right way. – [Commentator] Here’s
Turcotte heading to the net. Turcotte jams it on goal, they score! – There’s a purpose to him. There’s purpose to everything he does. So when you’re talking to him, before you even watch him play, you’re engaged and you see a guy that you wanna like as a player. – It hasn’t even hit me yet, so surreal and I just can’t wait to
get started with the Kings, it’s a dream come true. – Oh my god, he was ecstatic. He goes, “Thank you.” He said, “Thank you for believing in me.” No, it was really cool, he was. – How’s it goin’, congrats, dya hear that? – Your first thing I tell ’em is the minute your name is called, doesn’t matter anymore. You’re on the list, now it’s up to you. – I tell every kid that’s come in here, “You gotta be willing to pay a
price to take someone’s job.” No one hands you a job in the NHL, you have to take it. So what are you willing to do more than the guy next to you to take his job or that job? Our fans saw a lot of young guys coming in and there was a certain excitement and there was a buzz when
they were on the ice, they kept pressing and pressing and we’re gonna get
more of that this year. – [Commentator] Wagner,
down the middle, scores! Great pass from Doughty
down low, and they score! Grundstrom in game number one! – We’re fortunate that
we have some veterans that have great character,
they work really hard and they’re gonna be part of this process to teach ’em what it takes to win. But it shouldn’t be just about the fact that they have the experience of winning in the past is great, but it’s how they conduct themself today. It is a great opportunity for everyone. Every young kid that’s coming here, we have a new coach coming in. It’s a great opportunity I
think, for even our veterans. They have an opportunity to turn the page and to accomplish something that no one expect us to accomplish.

The Kings' Player Development will be put to a litmus test on Arthur Kaliyev. I read he essentially piggy back on someone's dirty work as a result teams didn't draft him in 1st. He checks some of the Kings' needs e.g. scoring, but the rest needs to be worked on.

Once Turcotte passed the two tables , especially the Oilers table most of them including Wayne Gretzky were all staring at this kid. and the next table the same thing..all eyes are on him. He must be a special player to watch
