Cox High School Celebrates Another State Field Hockey Championship

August 26, 2019

AFTER AN INCREABLY HARD FOUGHT SEASON, THE COX FIELD HOCKEY TEAM WON A STATE RECORD 19TH FIELD HOCKEY CHAMPIONSHIP THIS PAST WEEKEND. NATHAN EPSTIEN JOINS US FROM VIRGINIA BEACH WITH THAT STORY. AGAINST IMPROBABLE ODDS— IT’S STILL HITTING US ALL. I THINK IT’S ALL SINKING IN. THE FIELD HOCKEY TEAM AT COX HIGH SCHOOL EMERGED AS THE 6A STATE CHAMPION—- IT WAS JUST ONE OF THE MOST STORYBOOK ENDINGS THAT YOU COULD HAVE FOR A TEAM AND THEY DESERVE EVERYTHING. FACING A 22 AND 0 FIRST COLONIAL TEAM RANKED THIRD IN THE COUNTRY— THE MINDSET WAS WE WERE NOT GOING TO LOSE. THE FALCONS TOOK A 2 TO 1 LEAD WITH GOALS FROM ASHLEY DRUM AND LEAH CROUSE—AND HUNG ON FOR THE TITLE—THEIR FIRST WIN OVER THE PATRIOTS IN FOUR TRIES— IT MADE EVERYTHING WORTH IT. LOSING TO YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD RIVAL THREE TIMES IS THE WORST FEELING EVER, AND I THINK THE BEST GAME TO WIN WOULD HAVE BEEN THE STATE TITLE. HEAD COACH JULIE SWAIN WORE NUMBER 19 WHEN HER TEAM WON THE FIRST TITLE IN 1981— IT’S A VERY SPECIAL PLACE TO BE A VERY SPECIAL PLACE TO COACH. SHE’S NOW THE HEAD COACH FOR THE TEAM TO WIN THE 19TH FIELD HOCKEY CHAMPIONSHIP IN SCHOOL HISTORY—MORE THAN ANY OTHER PROGRAM IN VIRGNIA– WE HAVE EXPECTATIONS EVERY YEAR TO RISE ABOVE, AND RISE UP TO THESE SPECIAL OCCASSIONS AND THIS GROUP CERTAINLY DID THAT. IT FEELS GOOD TO BE A PART OF SOMETHING BIGGER THAN JUST ONE TEAM. IT’S A WHOLE TRADITION. TO JUST PAY RESPECT TO ALL THE TEAMS THAT CAME BEFORE US, AND TO JUST BE A PART OF SOMETHING THAT’S SO MUCH BIGGER THAN JUST ONE TEAM OR JUST ONE PERSON, IT MAKES IT ALL THAT MUCH BETTER. A STORYBOOK ENDING—FOR A STORIED PROGRAM—-IN VIRGINIA BEACH, NATHAN EPSTEIN FOR THE SPORTSWRAP. BASEBALL MVP’S HAVE BEEN
