Graysen Cameron, Humboldt Broncos Crash Survivor, Plays In Colorado Dawg Nation Charity Hockey Tourn

August 24, 2019

YOU’RE WATCHING AUTO NATION ALL ACCESS. ON APRIL 16, 2018, GRAYSON CAMERON FRACTURED HIS L-4 VERTEBRAE IN THE CATASTROPHIC COLLISION BETWEEN THE HUMBOLDT BRONCOS TEAM BUS ON A SASKATCHEWAN HIGHWAY. DOCTORS SAID HE WOULD NEVER LAY HOCKEY AGAIN. THIS WEEKEND HE PROVED EVERYONE WRONG. HE FLEW TO COLORADO TO PLAY IN THE DOG NATION BOWL HIS FIRST GAME BACK SINCE THE TRAGEDY. A YEAR AGO, DOCTORS WERE SAYING YOU MAY NEVER PLAY HOCKEY AGAIN. YEAH. DID YOU THINK A YEAR LATER YOU’D BE HERE ABOUT TO STEP ON THE ICE? NEVER REALLY CROSSED MY MIND. I KIND OF ACCEPTED IT THAT I’D TAKE A DIFFERENT PATH THROUGH HOCKEY AND GET ON THE COACHING SIDE. LAST YEAR WE BROUGHT GRAYSON OUT HERE. REALLY, IT WAS ONLY A COUPLE MONTHS AFTER THE ACCIDENT. HE WASN’T ABLE TO PLAY AND HE ENDED UP COACHING ON TOP DOGS TEAM AND I THINK BACK NOW AND I THINK I CAN’T BELIEVE HE CAME OUT LAST YEAR. WHEN I THINK ABOUT IT NOW AND TO SEE HIM NOW, I MEAN, IT’S — HE LOOKS HEALTHIER. HE LOOKS HAPPY. JUST AMAZING. I CAN’T WAIT TO WATCH HIM PLAY. WHEN I GOT THE NEWS THAT IT WAS A POSSIBILITY, I WAS, YEAH, COMPLETELY EXCITED AND JUST WANTED TO BE PRETTY MUCH RIGHT HERE WHERE I AM NOW. GRAYSON’S FIRST GAME BACK WAS NOTHING SHORT OF REMARKABLE. THE 20-YEAR-OLD SHARED THE ICE WITH CURRENT AND FORMER NHL PLAYERS LIKE PAUL STASTNY, JAN HEJDA TO NAME A FEW. IT’S SOMETHING I’LL REMEMBER THE REST OF MY LIFE AND REALLY GRATEFUL FOR THE OPPORTUNITY TO BE ON THE ICE WITH SOMEONE THAT GOOD. SPEAKS VOLUME TO HOW MUCH HARD WORK HE’S PUT IN AND JUST KIND OF EXPERIENCE HE’S GONE. GRAYSON DIDN’T JUST KEEP UP. HE PUT ON A SLOW IN HIS TOP DOG SWEATER. KIND OF BLACKED OUT THERE AND JUST TRIED TO TAKE IT IN AS BEST I COULD. THE PLACE KIND OF ERUPTED THERE AND EVERYONE WAS CHEERING FOR ME. PRETTY GOAL TOO. IT WASN’T A SLOPPY GOAL. IT WAS A NICE LITTLE EVERYTHING. GETTING BACK TO THE BENCH AND SEEING MY DAD CRYING AND STUFF, THAT DOESN’T HAPPEN TOO OFTEN. YEAH, I KNEW IT WAS A VERY SPECIAL MOMENT AND JUST, YEAH, TRIED TO TAKE IT IN AS BEST I COULD. PRETTY SURREAL. IT WAS A GREAT MOVE. IT WAS A GREAT GOAL. A LOT OF EMOTIONS CAME OUT AFTER THAT FOR SURE. IT WAS AWESOME. A YEAR LATER AND CHANGE, SCORING GOALS. CAN YOU KIND OF PUT IT INTO WORDS? NO, I HONESTLY CAN’T. I WORKED. I’VE WORKED REALLY HARD OVER THE LAST YEAR AND IT’S BEEN A VERY LONG ROAD AND RIGHT NOW IT’S JUST TRYING TO ENJOY IT. I KNOW NOW IT WAS ALL WORTH ALL THAT — ALL THE HARD TIMES AND UPS AND DOWNS, BUT IT’S ALL WORTH IT AND I KNOW I CAN MAKE MY WAY BACK TO PLAYING FULL TIME AND THIS IS JUST ONE OF THE STEPPINGSTONES FOR THAT. GRAYSON HOPES TO TAKE THE ICE AS A HUMBOLDT BROOKBANK
