NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs – Capitals vs. Penguins Game 3 Preview and Picks (5.1.17)

August 28, 2019

Well apparently the Capitals are indeed who we thought they were. They completely unraveled in front of the nation on Saturday night and will now have to overcome a 2-0 deficit in order to beat the Penguins in a playoff series for the first time since 1994. Since 1996 just eight teams have come back to win a playoff series after losing the first two games at home that 17.4% and just one has ever done so in the second round so you’re telling me there’s a chance. As for tonight’s Game 3 it’s the definition of a must-win for the Caps and for my reputation. Washington opened as a +115 dog and it’s likely this thing closes near even with everything that’s on the line. Given how the Capitals have absolutely dominated 5 on 5 play in this series I think it would be close to Sean Avery levels of stupid to not consider a bet on Washington on the money line here. They’ve out shot the Penguins 57 to 34 so far in even strength play and that’s not insignificant. What the first two games of this best of seven have come down to is goaltending and if you had told me at the start of the series that Braden Holtby was going to be the worst of two goalies in a matchup of Marc-Andre Fluery I would have laughed in your face. Posting an 829 combined five-on-five save percentage in game one and two though the Caps number 1 tendy has been awful. That said Holtby is a much better player when he faces a high volume of shots and considering that the Penguins generated more shots on their home ice in the regular season than any other team expect his workload as well as his performance to increase tonight and expect Washington to make this a series with their first win in Pittsburgh in their last seven games played there. That’s my only bold prediction for Monday’s slate but check out the NHL tab at for my complete preview of the game make sure it’s tuned into OddsShark live at 2:30 p.m. Eastern for Johnny OddsShark’s outlook and follow me on twitter @robtrocity. Let’s start the week off right guys and of course keep on growing those playoff beards and bankrolls and remember you lose 100% of the bets that you don’t make.
