SLEDGE HOCKEY | STICK SECRET #2

August 27, 2019

– Hey everyone, so today
I wanna talk to you about a trick for the end
of your sticks which will help
you in your play when reaching for passes. So, a common
problem that a lot of players, I think, at all levels, I know, throughout my career
that I’ve experienced is that when we’re reaching
for passes, right… So hands at the top of the
stick, you’re picking, and when you go to the bottom,
you wanna reach out and the grab the bottom of
your stick for that pass in front of you. And it’s very easy for you to reach for that pass and one
of two things is gonna happen. Either you’re gonna
reach and the stick completely slides out of your hand. Or when you reach quickly
and grab the bottom, you end up grabbing the picks. When you got your glove on, is that, as your reach for the bottom,
this has happened to me before, is I grab the stick with
the picks in my hands and either, the pick will then
slice the inside of my glove which will mean my
gloves become trash. Or I’ll even, if it happens really… Hard, I guess you could call it,
I end up cutting my hand. So there’s a way to prevent
that from happening. So, what you wanna do is,
the same way that you create the type of grip you want
for the shaft or your stick, you’re just gonna
want to take the tape… Alright, and then… Twist it, you’re gonna want
to do this a few times. And just so I give credit
where credit is due, I learned this trick from
Adam Nixon on Team Canada. He’s a very creative, really
smart guy in sledge hockey. And so, you’re gonna
start above the top nut and bolt on
the bottom here. You don’t wanna go below
and I’ll tell you why in a second. So, just start wrapping
around the bottom. You wanna go a few times over,
’cause you’re gonna wanna make this clearly and obviously stand out. Got it roughly about three
times around there. I’m gonna go once more. Okay. Alright, so I’ve gone here
about four times around. And then now, without
crushing it or anything, you’re just gonna want to
cover the rest of it up. Cover the top, cover the
middle, and the bottom. Now, here’s what’s key is
that you don’t want to tape over top of the nuts for the bottom of your
picks here, because what’s happened before is
when I started doing this, is I tapped the whole butt end
and think it looked really cool, it was hidden but then,
in the odd case, you end up breaking
a pick mid-game, you wanna be able to have
room that you can actually get your wrench on top
of that and get the picks off without having to undo
all of your tape. So just tape right above it. So now, as you can see,
you have something that will stop your hand from
going all the way down. So now, what you’ll find is that when you actually
reach for a pass, you can use that guard
to stop your hand at the bottom of the stick before you get to the picks. Just go down and grab. Your pinkie finger will
likely stop there. I’m slightly below my grip
point that’s good for me. But it’s just a quick jump up,
where if I really had to, I could stick handle a puck
there but I’m not completely lost at the bottom and
I’m not at risk of slicing my own glove open. Hey everyone, thanks
so much for tuning in. It means the world to me if you
can leave comment below. Please tell me what we

Thanks Kevin, have been taping over the hardware and couldn't repair or tighten the picks. Took off tape and the picks caught the gloves just like you said. 68 years old and still learning. The Wounded Warriors Program Winter Sports Clinic in Calabogie, On. Feb. 6th,2018, we at Community Living in Renfrew provide our 30 or so sledges and sticks to play sledge hockey. Maybe, if you're not in Korea yet, you could join the game. Thanks for your tips, Allan
