This is BJ Schaben. What a way to cap off the state tournament at this matchup This is gonna be a good one. And I’m gonna apologize right up front for my voice It’s been an exciting tournament yelled a lot this week. So I’ve lost my voice but we’re gonna muddle through it. You’re right It’s gonna be defense against offense and West Hancock likes to get up and down the floor They like to run but they have not seen this pressure kind of defense that they’re gonna see tonight from newell-fonda Frank You’re a coach for us We take a look at the West Hancock Eagles the school making its third trip to state no seniors on the roster on the starting five through two games well It’s been the Rachel leer Amanda Chyzyk show 48 points 30 rebounds impressive now for newell-fonda They’d like to run gun and do it some more Fifth title game in seven years all the starters back from the runner-up team a year ago. They’re winning by an average Let’s say 40 points a game and boy Can they get after it defensively 60? Steele’s course 82 turnovers from the first two games here at the state tournament led of course by Olivia Larson and Maisie Severs also doing an exceptional job in on the defensive side of things Let’s go to the public address announcer Joe a Hammond ball tournament the Iowa Bankers Association Presents the student athlete achievement award to a student athlete who excels on the court in the classroom and in her community The recipient receives a $1,000 scholarship to the College of her choice the 2019 student athlete achievement award is Maci Cramer from Marquette Catholic High School Presenting the 2019 award is Tim Daugherty from Bellevue State Bank Congratulations to Macy Kramer and thank you to Tim dougherty with Bellevue State Bank and the Iowa Bankers Association for their sponsorship of this award and continued support of the IGA HSA you Let’s say a cock fans. Number 12 Riley Hiscox And for newell-fonda five six senior number 40 Olivia Larsen For West Hancock a six-foot junior number 35 Amanda cheese’s And for newell-fonda 5/9 some for number 42 ella Larson the Head coach for West Hancock is Paul Sonja at the head coach for newell-fonda is dick jungars Before abyss is receiving our Tim osterhaus spots flyers and Jeff forced The bench official is Travis peeler Welcome West Hancock and newell-fonda to the 2019, Iowa girls state tournament So the stage is set for the class 1a state championship game for West Hancock trying to get a title here What do they need to do don’t stand around? They can’t they can’t be stationary they have to make this deep work and And they want to be able to run and gun and then they need to get paint touches get the ball establish the middle on the inside see if they can get that middle game going and Get some points in there before they work to the outside game in the run-and-gun Well, they’re gonna turn up the heat they always do this is a pressure type of defense They’re gonna turn up the heat. You can’t see them. You can’t hear them, but they’re always there You have to be aware and get that balanced attack. They have seven players that averaged seven points or more on their team So they’re gonna get it scoring from everybody on that floor Uniforms and for the Eagles of West Hancock it’s red with white numbers trimmed and gray and Larson Winslet gets the Opening tip and takes it right to the basket Olivia Larson Six points away now four points away from being the all-time leading scorer in school history And how about this right off the tip? Well, that’s a quickness that you’re gonna see from newell-fonda. And that’s how they score they get out they outrun you they out hustle you and they get to the hoop a lot of Talk about how West Hancock would be able to handle the pressure They have not seen or had a team, press them all year according to their head coach Paul Zhonya’s, he thinks they wanted to run with them So we’ll see if they went a stick to that game plan or not as Larson is able to get the bucket She’s got quick for points. They do this all night and day as Lyra will bring it up to try to avoid the trap Well, if you haven’t seen this all season long, it’s going to be very hard to adjust The three off the mark there’s T’s adjust bring it up But you have a middle person in Chyzyk. That’s gonna be able to clean up the boards and if you miss shots She’s gonna be right there in the 4a title game We saw a renaissance in that backyard the post player. But how about Emma Stewart cranking it up? seven two newell-fonda Stewart comes into this game 62 three pointers on the season. That is a Mustang record for a senior so she is deadly from the outside second turnover Mihaela Faust could not handle the ball there on the floor for the Eagles again leer iseman Foust Hiscox and cheese ik for newell-fonda Olivia nella Larsen Firenze wolken and Stewart Here’s Larson on the drive and she gets it or her scoring is down this year Slightly as she’s averaging just over 13 a game last year. She was averaging close to 19 But she’s getting her teammates more involved than there’s the third turnover of the game by West Hancock Eagles need to settle down here and Larson is on all go mode the five six junior averaging 13 points a game Gonna be going on to Morningside to play basketball in Sioux City Now at the top the three this one’s off the mark cheese that could clean it up and again Arms hands everything in the way for newell-fonda as they’re scraping Here against West Hancock, you can never get comfortable against this kind of defense We’ll drive and finish just a sophomore Listed at 5/7 has over a thousand points in her career. Did that earlier this week at the state tournament? Well, that’s what do you need to do it? You just need to attack go right at this beeps And that’s exactly what your font is doing is getting the ball down the floor They’re attacking the West camp got defense Maroons able to get it in The bucket her first of the game and newell-fonda is up by seven We’re trying to work enough the floor against Larson, then that’ll be her first Check out newell-fonda just so scrappy towards the basket as Megan Marantz fills it up averaging nearly nine a game on so about filling lanes running two lanes Making sure you’re in the right position and that’s what newell-fonda does so well the Sieber sisters The cousins get into the game Bailey and then Maisie Maisie, of course her father. John was a part of the 1997 state championship boys team. He was the point guard starting point guard on that squad Rod of history with newell-fonda and basketball they tried to dump it into cheese ik and she’s pushed from the backside That’s Ella Larson who will pick up her first That’s gonna be a tough assignment for Ella Larson trying to handle Chyzyk on the inside in the low block Seven-point deficit for the Eagles They like to run and gun, but I don’t think they’ve seen this type of run and gun this season Sonja’s talked about getting it into the half court two as well But they are really comfortable being in that half-court set. They like to get out and run Jesus Frank The second basket of the game and the lead trimmed back down to five This is the first time to during the state tournament that West Hancock has had to fight from behind newell-fonda Has never trailed also here at the state tournament Larson gonna be hand checked up top that goes against Faust her first You know the equalizer in this ballgame is gonna be cheesy. I think you’re gonna see both of these teams run and gone But I don’t think you’ll find has anybody that can match up in the middle with cheesy Kennedy Kelly will check into the game for the first time Out goes his Cox Will find a 52 and one over the last two years the last loss here at the state championship against Springville a year ago This three wide of the mark And it will be last touched by West handcart Those long three-point shots are gonna come off the rim hard you got to have your hands ready up and ready to rebound Here’s severs looking to work it up top Eagles settling in and what appears to be a zone? Here’s Larson the running hook hits the side of the backboard and the rebound tracked down to iseman will launch it ahead Faust it’s just a ping-pong ball right now And a near steal To try to dump it into cheese ik and it’s last touched by newell-fonda for 18 to play here in the open And the Mustangs will go back to their bench Coming in is going to be Maggie Walker As The Eagles have the ball right now Lehrer Is barely touched it here so far in the opening quarter except for a basket And now a foul is going to be called here on newell-fonda Good inside position there by Kelly Wait a second, they did call it against newell-fonda This goes against banging Walker her first, that’s what we thought The veteran officiating crew here tonight at the officiating all weekend For the most part has been excellent superb for the state championship. We always seem to have great officials here at the state tournament There’s Jesus get the bunny and the rebound to Walker Looking to run Stewart and He’ll underneath severs left and short Walker shot. Not there and a foul on T’s occur first They just kept going at her and add her and add her until they could finally draw the contact on her You know, but there’s newell-fonda team they’re just so aggressive in every aspect of the game Well, they’ve won by an average of 41 points per game this season as we mentioned all five starters are back from a year ago And in fact when you look at the class 1a field as this free-throw is st. By Walker They lead the class 1a field in almost every category as this is on the ground. It’ll be tied up It will stay with West Hancock that scoring 3-point field goals assists and steals They’ve got seven players averaging over seven points a game when you talk about those steals 67 in the first two games here of this tournament. It’s just that’s defense that is in your face all the time Lera nearly had it taken away And on the drive and the layup is there a halo foul Well, as I said I think South we’re gonna be able to hang with newell-fonda is an attack on the offensive end on the dribble Drive How about that free splash down by Emma Stewart? She’s got six and now is steal by Walker, but she lost it out of bounds She’s trying to pull that in and see if she could get the break going and it went right off of her hands Pausanias the head coach from West Hancock wants to take a timeout settle his team down They’re down by seven again with 3:15 to play here in the opening quarter We take a look at it here the Mustangs white. They know where everybody is at out on the floor, Emma Stewart Just set her feet. Well, she just totally Point fine and she waited for the ball to come to her. She’s their three-point marksman and She didn’t have anybody coming out on her to defend so she just let it fly and knocked it down So dual Bandhu they use a lot of players they shuffle them in and out like a hockey line The gap prints along with Olivia Larson also Ella Larson is out there too as well The Mustangs looking to go to work defensively Emma Stewart out there too as A three ball goes off the mark and it’s going to be off of West Hancock Variables throw over the top of the defense get the dribble drive and then kick it out for the three Cameron Wilkin Back out on the floor to newell-fonda. So Olivia Larson will bring it up Eagles gonna switch it up to a man-to-man defense And they’re chasing the cutters everywhere on the floor this shot blocked away by TV Now leer he’s had a tough time getting going Finally gets to set up the offense Let’s see what she does the sophomore will drive it in in traffic not there and now the putback and counted Kennedy Kelly Coming alive here in the class 1a state championship game Kelly just follows it up after the drive of layer You can see trying to split the double-team right through boom coming in crashing the boards. Kelly gets the bucket and the free throw Makes it a four-point game West Hancock trying to avoid that initial surge, but Olivia Larson able to connect with mer ends As she cut the defense in half the lead back to six what a great job by Larson to just get the spin move and then the assist she leads his team in assists and steals as well as scoring Again, the drive and this one’s gonna be blocked out of bounds Kelly rudely greeted by Ella Larson and that’s fine by her 17 to 11 newell-fonda West Hancock with the ball Kelly to Chyzyk. Now, they’ll kick it back out leer thought about it Now will drive it in Little three-man game here for West Hancock There’s a three ball by his cox. Can’t get the roll and the rebound to newell-fonda Larsson again on the attack and we’ll get two shots Little continuation here as Olivia Larsen will be at the line here a 64 percent free-throw shooter It was a good job of box out by newell-fonda I mean all white jerseys around the Rim, I’m able to get and push the ball up before their Livia Larson who tries to split the defenders Larson was 6 so far adds another Had 12 steals earlier this season against West Bend Ballard in a game Here’s Kelly And it will be turned over for thoroughbreds the game against West Hancock and again another semi-lying change for dick Junkers and his team Coming back in is Maisie severs along with Maggie Walker also back in as Bailey severs as They join Olivia Larson and Ella Larson out on the floor Mustangs will work a lot of players in and out. Here’s Larson on the drive the kick inside and Now the jumper not there on the rebound coming down to Iseman And a foul gonna be called here on the Mustangs, which is going to be their fifth And this goes against Maggie Walker her second You know here at the state tournament it is the 100th tournament that they’re celebrating here and It’s always been fun over the years to see the different media outlets here, and it’s been no different this week but here in the state championship game in class 1a Being a longtime broadcaster radio if you will To get things started in my career to see over nine stations here broadcasting the game here tonight We haven’t seen that first. Sometimes as that three is just buried by the halophiles Right now wescam cock is hitting on all cylinders are getting inside game and the outside game They’re getting the good balance. And that’s what you need to try to beat this newell-fonda team Kennedy Kelley picks up the foul her first dribble drive kick out Knocked down the three-point jump. That’s what you do. You draw the deep to you and kick it out to the three-point shooters Back to work here for Maisie severs now to the corner. That’s Larson for three Seems like it’s an automatic mode Here for Olivia Larson and newell-fonda. They lead it by seven again When she is her passed the point total she becomes her career all-time leading scorer at noon Unbelievable feat when you think about that program fifty They certainly have had a lot of really good players that have come through that system But she has been playing for a long time playing as a freshman Accumulated a lot of points. She’s at the top of that defense. So she gets a lot of steals in a lot of layups Ashley Archer now and for the first time for newell-fonda Here’s Larson inside working the block and it’s last touched by West Hancock Just a shade inside of ten seconds to play in the quarter Looks cut by Larson right into the middle of the defense Newell-fonda got to work with it severs at the top down to the corner Larson for three No, that’s what a senior can do for you aware of the time in the situation of the border calmly launches a three-pointer Aware that the clocks winding down may at the buzzer Newell-fonda takes a 10-point lead after the opening eight minutes. Let’s go to paul yeager who’s standing by? Oh Wow Olivia Larsson my word, you know newell-fonda had scored 54 percent of their tourney points off turnovers tonight It’s all about the three does never know what happens in the championship game but here’s what happened in the semifinal game against Marquette Catholic Maggie Walker was the one that was In May seat severs finds the cutting Walker Just right to the basket and two more Fonda was up big in half and it just continued. Hey, that’s 40 I think she just I think she’s doing okay Olivia Larson Impressive so far in this game Olivia Larson at 12 And no amount of rolled against Marquette Catholic now West Hancock up on highway 18 west of mason city with a nice roll early on as Rachel Lyra and now Manny Iseman up ahead salir on the layup Eagles up 5 at the break on Montezuma leer again in the corner and now driving it over shit AO weathering Lear 25 Points as West Hancock advance to tonight’s title game. Let’s go back down to the floor for BJ and Laura Thanks ball 1 an opening quarter for newell-fonda 24 points Gave up 14 West Hancock 25 and one coming into this game They’ve been averaging about 63 points a game But they’ve had trouble against this pressure early on got close with in for a couple of times now Coach Sonya’s and his team gonna try to settle down here Temper the waves and get back into it here in the second quarter newell-fonda will start with the ball to begin the next eight minutes West Hancock sinks into a man-to-man defense here severs who was caught up on the drive Now the dump down Larson says just give it to me I got ten here so far tonight She’s just getting things set up and getting that offense rotation going the Gabrus seem and she’s able to crack it and Able to shoot that right around cheesing And the layup on this end is not there for West Hancock West Hancock did a good job of getting back from defensive transition that time slowing down a little bit It’s back to work for the Mustangs once again Severs Caught up in the paint and it’s going to be turned over we’re gonna try to create some points off of it, but one on three and Nearly turned it over now the three Left short cheese, it can’t get the rebound and it will stay with the eagle West Hancock could use some points here down by 12 Bailey severs was battling. She’s at down low and trying to get position for that rebound She’s it’s too strong for her and the Bowen office severs Welkin will come back in. She’s joined by Emma Stewart along with Maisie severs firenze and also bailey severs We’re at the point, we just got her pocket picked by Maisie severs Why’d you have to protect the ball Every time you put it on the floor and a reach-in foul here called On newell-fonda bailey severs will be called for the foul. Look at the quick hands picking the pocket going the other way Newell-fonda has doubled up West Hancock here with some big runs Kelly on the drive He’s got five Kelly calling for the ball and doing a good job of driving baseline Stop for the Eagles two on one down this side of things. Here’s weird Great lead pass Max Irby, that’s what they do. They’re running gun So if they can get the Miss the rebound and get the running game going they’re gonna get back in this ball game the newell-fonda On Lear got it collided with with Walker now numbers back this way and the layup is good For Bailey severs the kick-out is there if West Hancock can get an advance past mid court It’s overloaded with langurs. He’s here on this side leer with the corner. Kick hit the three-ball She’s at with the rebound and putback not there, but she’ll go to the line to shoot two This is how they can get back into this game the dribble-drive Being aggressive and then getting the run up This is their game the running gun a couple of passes down the floor easy layup. That was the seventh team foul on newell-fonda Cheese ik able to hit the first free throw Larson will come back in Olivia Also back in is Ashley Archer the next free throw goodbye TV You’ll find a shooting is sizzling 57% from the field archers shine can’t get it to fall Larson out hustled everybody this three-ball in and out forsen again with the rebound And this is going to be tied up West Hancock will get the ball back Larson just has a motor that does not quit. She goes after every loose ball. She’s in every scrum after every loose ball She’s right in the middle of the action Now they run it ahead with Kelly trying to avoid the double-team and get it into the half court We’re just get pass to the wing Lera for three Able to get open get her a good look at though great job of catch and release Then lead back down to seven Larson tries to feed the paint No good on the shot with the Larson Ella, but she’ll go to the line to shoot two. I Believe that’s gonna be the second foul on there So with West Hancock down by seven Coach Sonja is going to keep clear in the game As this free throw is knocked down by lor Larson her first bucket our first point, excuse me Maisie severs will now check back in And hit some boats does Ellen Larson Lead back to 9 Here’s leer in the paint speeds cheesing overshot the hoop in the rebound to newell-fonda Larson just attacking And a foul will be called against Olivia Larson that’s her second Trying to go in line two in line could not turn the corner to get the good angle at the hoop Wiggle screen I think it was once called by Ashley Archer That’s one way of getting a teammate to the hoop Now the deep three Nine-point advantage for newell-fonda The Eagles will come back into the game with Riley his cocks Grabbing some benches Madison Iseman Well newell-fonda is used to being way out in front about this time in a ballgame as you had mentioned beat their opponents average of about 40 points a game So West Hancock’s doing a great job of hanging in there and doing what they do there surviving that first wave of defense They’re getting set up on their offensive end. They’re scoring even though they’re down a little bit They’re hanging in there and trying to make it uncomfortable for newell-fonda Their closest game was a 12 point win against s to the Lincoln central Who qualified for the state tournament? Boy, if you haven’t read the story they had an interesting trip down here on Monday to try to get here to the state tournament Had all that snow it’s hard to believe it was almost a week ago But things still have been melted sighs last night checked well they had snow plows leading them out of town They couldn’t get out of town So they had to have the snow plows come and help four-wheel drive tractors going out to pick up the players good stuff foul here on the inside called against West Hancock That’s a man achieves a cool pickup per second so to the line here with Ella Larsen a 69% free-throw shooter Larson sinks to the free-throw a very good pitcher in softball for newell-fonda In fact, she was a starting pitcher for that team as an 8th grader And now is a sophomore doing some really good things on the hardwood Knocks down both free throws she has four all from the line to lead back to 11 for newell-fonda Here’s leer Just cut through the defense and gets the bucket You keep your head up you keep the ball going You keep the dribbler going you look for the angles. And that’s what Leo did a Nine-point effort so far by Rachel Lear Severs on the drive the kick inside to Archer And a foul gonna be here on new Fondant when the shot goes up four bodies crash the glass For the Mustangs and it’s free through a time down here on the other end Is when the shot goes up everybody crashing but then if you don’t get the rebound get yourself in position to play good defense Where’s free-throw not there out of the one and one of the Mustangs come up with a rebound Olivia Larson, ah Go into the game Lost it in traffic And a timeout going to be taken here by last Hancock each possession is important Eagles are going to be left with three timeouts as Newell-fonda has a big lead here at 34 25. Let’s go to their bench in here from their head coach Dickes Jungers Offensively, okay. Let’s go up. We’re gonna go one game live with this Okay, get that ball moving and shaking get that ball moving inside outside. Keep attacking. Okay. We want to keep attacking guy Freddie Finish this thing. Here we go team on three one, two three Hey, they’re all fired up, maybe they want to get into the locker room because coming up at the half Iowa Public Television, it is going to do a feature on this newell-fonda Program its history the championships the wins that they’ve accumulated over the years And of course when you have seven mothers who played at the state tournament There’s a lot of history and tradition to here with newell-fonda Can’t wait to see the future that’s coming up the app also coming up at the half If you’re a little nostalgic an you might be with this being the hundredth tournament, there’s going to be six on six play During the break that will be showing you. It’s going to be Ankeny taking on Dowling Catholic The old style six on six here’s Lear who brings it up into the frontcourt Paul loose on the floor will be tied up newell-fonda We’ll get it on the alternate possession And you heard during that timeout coach Unger said, let’s go back to deny and that’s exactly what they did They got a little more aggressive on the defensive side of things and they were able to get the turnover Mago will put it into the corner to Olivia Larson Now with the right-hander shot too strong and the rebound gonna be tracked down by Larson Lago for three Second chance points for newell-fonda and you have to credit olivia Larson for just hanging in there going to the offensive glass and Counted Continuation Kennedy Kelley will go to the line The nice step through move by Kelley over Step through the two defenders draw the contact the bucket We are playing in the home of the Iowa wolf so you get that continuation here Kelly Left it short Jesus with the rebound now to Kelly Lera will drive it from 14 and she’s gonna be bumped on the shot and Will go to the line to shoot 2 7 rebounds now for cheesy Mason severs will pick up the foul Free-throw time for the Eagles Lyra connects a 71% free-throw shooter on the year now Archer will come in Trying to get it manageable here before the end of the first half and we’re Knocks down a pair of free throws and you’re in the double bonus Go ahead and continue to attack and even in this last minute and a half if you can score some points without the clock moving You’re gonna get a little closer right before half-time. Give yourself some momentum Olivia Larson is out of the game right now for newell-fonda. Anna Powell gonna be called here on West Hancock 15 first half points for Olivia Larson And Kennedy Kelley will pick up her second. So to the line with the freshman and Macey severs Kelan will check out and the hey look boss will come back in Eagle is having a little trouble and backboard here Need to get it across the half-court line and they just do before the 10-count Here’s the three Jesus will track down the rebound Music has been able to give them so many extra opportunities but those offensive rebounds Iseman TenPoint game This one knocked three picked up by woken Archer to the corner deceivers for three got Mad is a big bucket for newell-fonda. The lead had been cut down to tip And they get the big bucket right there before half Working the ball around at one extra pass right into the corner nothing but net Camryn woken will pick up the bell here leer back to the line to shoot two We’d back down to 12 See if West Hancock will put on a little pressure defense here in the last 23 seconds You see if they can get a steal and a quick bucket before the buzzer So Seavers gonna bring it across the half-court line see if Mustang the Mustangs will hold for one Archer for three can’t get the rule the offensive rebound putback isn’t there you’ll find it again with the rebound and This shot for finally By Seavers at the horn. No Banda imposing his will on the interior They’ve got a 13-point lead 44 31 through the first 16 minutes of play newell-fonda shooting 50% from the field 60% from three-point range And led by Olivia Larson who is 15 at the break? Let’s go to Paul Yeager who’s standing by? All right. Thank you very much BJ and joining us now is dick Junkers head coach of newell-fonda and coach, you know We’ve seen your team year in and year out relentless. You’re off to that start tonight, but normally it’s the points and off turnovers But your 3-point shooting for the season 30% tonight 55 in the first half what’s going right there boy. I’d say the first two games We really suit the ball well, but we’re shooting it well tonight We have a little bit of foul trouble right now, but the girls that are getting out there getting open look They’re doing a great job of knocking down your defense though is also just not allowing West Hancock to get many looks as I assume that’s what you wanted to do Yeah we want to limit the penetration to the basket and our girls doing a great job of Rotating in and get most those driven off I don’t know how many free throws we gave up so far you have that for me Oh, I got to turn around and then you know, you’re gonna see everything and the magic. No, I don’t know yet. I Just know we put them on the free-throw line quite a bit. So we need we need to shore that up and Again, just keep moving the ball on offense and finding those hot shooters. All right Thank You coach. Appreciate your time. Hey, no problem Coach dick jungars head coach of newell-fonda go hear from him in just a moment And the rest of his team joining us now is Craig Hill the president of Iowa farm, Bureau and Craig Again, handing out trophies you got great seats for those games tonight And again the Iowa girl in the spotlight and Farm Bureau’s right there So I’m guessing that you’re you’re okay that this combination is working Why is Farm Bureau here and enjoying this so much? well The competition is working and and Farm Bureau has been such a traditional and historical supporter of Iowa’s youth and we so much enjoyed doing That and the special partnership that we have with the Iowa girls Athletic Union These tournament plays the signature basketballs everything we can do to help support. I wish youth. You know, we were known for helping 4-h and FFA and the scholarships you know the grants and all the awards recognition programs we have but this is special and these young Student athletes bring it out and bring it all to the court and their dreams are coming true here And we’re just glad to be a part of that and you get a close-up view you do get to meet all the all-tournament team Members you get to see them We do agony of defeat and the victory side of things and they work so hard Not just on the court, but off the court as well and you’re glad to be partnered with them on both parts of their lives Exactly, right and you know as I said, you know, we promote our Iowa’s youth. It’s our best crop It’s our number one crop in Iowa But we also want to protect them and so something we’re doing this year for the first time Is providing concussion insurance and you know the unlikely event of a concussion, but there is a financial concern when you do have that and so all students in Iowa any of the sanction sports any of the play Have an insurance policy backing them up So they don’t have a financial hardship either by the school the parents or the student if there is a concussion So we’re doing that new this year. All right. I appreciate your time. All right. Good to see you about to be here Thank you very much and that’s Craig Hill the president of Iowa farm Bureau and a lot of farmers in North Iowa and the residents of Iowa towns of Newell and Fonda have had plenty to cheer for Since they’re two schools merged in 1989 the Mustangs legacy of speed and shooting has led them to the state tournament 14 times But his IPTV sports producer Tyler Brinegar discovered? It’s the newell-fonda work ethic that Bond’s these communities and may keep the Mustangs running for years to come 9 miles of Buena Vista in Pocahontas County separate the northwest Iowa towns of Newell and Fonda but since the new aprofitableday.com Communities have been pooling their resources. I Get asked all the time. How is it possible that North honor gets all the athlete Noah fonder gets its share of great athletes, but Our real key. I think has been the work ethic work Every death leads have turned into great basketball players Former coach Jody mask was inducted into the Iowa Girls Coaches Association Hall of Fame in recognition Of his high-pressure hot shooting teams. We’ve tried to focus on Three things. We wanted to be great shooters, and we wanted to shoot the three a lot we wanted to Certainly pressure people all over the floor and we also wanted up temple the game We wanted to get out and run and the interesting thing I think is for 25 years. That is still what Noah Fonda does When the five player transitioned doubled the size of the court the Mustangs were ready to run We like to run and gun and press and play our pace cuz a lot of teams can’t hang with us a Lot of our girls are very fast and have good endurance so I mean we can run we can really run forever it feels like If you’re open take a shot at it You don’t have to run the play you get it to the person that’s opening. There you go Okay, yes, they’re bumping you yesterday your arms Okay gotta fight through that If you put in a game tape of us 10, 12 14 years ago some stuff would look the same But we tweaked our teams based on the skill set that rises to the top No matter how you can help us whether you’re a great post player or great shooting guard or whatnot We’re gonna try to find the skill set. That gives us the best chance of winning They’re very unselfish though. Don’t make that extra pass You might see nine kids average five or more points a game And that’s what makes it fun I had a really great experience here newell-fonda Local legend renee manaman went on to a storied career at Northwestern University in Orange City But it was her performances at the well that put manaman ‘s name in the halls of this K through 12 school 2014 state runner-up and then also a part of the 2013 state runner-up. Here’s madman killer crossover Renee manaman used to be my role model I saw her succeeding in the program and that’s what I wanted to be player of the game two years I guess came up a little short those two years but it was a great honor for me and Just really being able to spend those memories with my teammates was probably the best memory out of all of them 20 19 marks knew a fondness for teenth trip to the state tournament They finished runner-up six times three of those games decided by three points or fewer When you start making long runs, it’s such a bittersweet feeling because no matter how things turn out something wonderful is coming to an end We’ve been fortunate to win a title a few years ago And that was a truly wonderful experience and then we fell short a few times in that Championship game and your heart falls out of your chest when that happens But on the other hand your team found a way to get there You have to always remind the kids to enjoy the moment Like renee manaman jennifer husted transitioned from mustang standout to college athlete Two diehard fan, you know, I still have that competitive drive I still want to get out of them that corridor you got to be on the sidelines over there helping coach the girls anything I can do to cheer mine. We’re back of a hundred percent Jennifer’s grandmother has been a fixture in the newer bleachers since the Eisenhower administration when her oldest aunt was tiny baby in 57 And a lot of kids The same as it always has been you know girls will come girls will leave they work into the system and They get going okay energy enthusiasm playing with that fire and passion Don’t make any mistake about it to me. The culture here at newell-fonda is strong You can look in that mirror and say I gave it my very best. Okay Everything else will take care of itself. You see it throughout the school kids would want to be successful People are leading them to be successful It takes parents giving their time. It takes kids certainly wanting to be a part of it, but you know basketball is play Nobody says let’s go work basketball. They say let’s go play. Let’s go play basketball to me That doesn’t mean there’s not sweat There’s not sore muscles maybe even sometimes there’s a few tears but this is play and I think it nor Fonda coaches do a great job of letting kids play a Reminder that coverage of the Iowa girls high school State basketball championships and halftime features like the one we just showed you would not be possible without the support of IPTV fans like you so please Take a moment now to support the statewide Network and become part of our team by making a pledge at IPTV friends org slash donate we know many of you are talking about it on Twitter So make the way you like our coverage, so please dial a hit up IPTV friends org slash donate let’s go back courtside BJ Schaben with a special six on six celebrities BJ Thanks, what volume sitting next to the MVP of the last six on six state champion, of course it was a 1993 Hubbard Radcliffe and Lisa brink Meyer now joining us, of course with the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union in a Special segment here this year for the 100th tournament as a special six on six game. How’d this come about? Well, we were brainstorming last fall about ways that we could make the hundredth anniversary of girls state basketball and obviously a rich part of our tradition was six on six so Our executive director Jean Berger said maybe we should do a six on six game, you know somehow have the game in front of people that you know have never seen it and Also for the people who lived it and loved it. Well, let’s take a look at the rules here So you have three forwards on offense three guards on defense for each team. The court is actually split in half No crossing the center line players allowed two dribbles no tie ups outside of the lane and after a made basket at referee brings the ball up the floor and Inbounds it to the forward at midcourt So tonight we have Dowling Catholic against Ankeny Centennial and these are junior varsity players who’ve been practicing this over the last few weeks and of course, we’ve got some Favorites of ours coaches from way back in the six on six day also the five on five day as they made the transition For Dowling Catholic. It’s Bob and Sharon Hansen and for the Ankeny Centennial Jaguars its Dick rasmusson and Jerry Wetzel your officials two out of retirement Randy Blum and Pete Peterson still running up the floor and looking in fantastic shape as We get things going here as you look at it. Does this reminiscent of how it used to be played? Yes it is. You know what? That’s the neat thing about basketball whether they’re doing two dribbles Or they’re doing ten dribbles or dribbling all the way down the court or half way down the court I mean, it’s still the competitiveness They’re still doing the crisp passes, you know, they’re they’re doing a lot of the same things But you just can’t cross half court or dribble more than twice. And these players have picked it up It’s been really competitive out here. Just watching this at intermission. Of course, you’re watching the class 1a state championship game we’re at halftime and this is a special exhibition of Six-on-six basketball and you can see tough. It can be to advance it past the half-court line It is I’m sure these girls when they told their parents that they were doing this a lot of their mothers May have played the six-on-six game or caught part of it Anyway, I bet their mothers thought it was neat that they got to play a sport that has been gone for 26 years now that they got to have a chance to experience what they experienced their grandmothers the great grandmothers even and like I said It’s a part of it’s a rich tradition. It is something very unique to, Iowa And I think that even though it’s been gone for 26 years. There’s still a lot of people that remember it And you can see you can rack up some points in big ways That was probably one of the more staggering things we’ve seen with some of the scoring records that were set with six on six play lots of scoring, you know one of the rules and I think people tend to forget that you you couldn’t hold the ball for over three seconds outside of the Lane, you know now we have like the three-second rule inside the lane But outside the lane either had the dribble pass or shoot within three seconds So there was a lot of action going on in the game and you know You couldn’t stand up here and hold the ball and let the clock wind down you had to do something That’s why I think some of the high scoring came in and Plus with two dribbles. They had to be creative There’s less people on the court So there was less congestion when you’re trying to shoot the score and with a six on six game It was just there were some prolific scorers That had a finesse a great great touch those shots. They spent a long long time working on them And you know, you would see people scoring 70 80 points a game Talked about your transition from that final year of six on six then to college where it was five on five where we’re at today the Transition was that for you from the high school level to the collegiate level when the game was more open Well, it was nice that my coaches at Drake Lisa Blue dirge and Jensen Jenny Fitzgerald They had played the six on six game so they knew that you know, the fundamentals were there the shooting were there you just had to teach Conditioning in some benson’s of defense and I would say, you know, the physical part of it was a little bit You know going full court Just the contact, you know we didn’t have a lot of that and then learning offense defense, you know, I was a forward I Was one when I went to Drake All I want to do is play man-to-man because I couldn’t figure out zone. So everybody else want to play zone buzzing Oh, no, give me one girl. No her number I could stick with her But it was a bit of a transition for sure And for most people that are watching this too they’re probably thinking Different rules different game and I think from what? Just talking with some of the players and of course the the coaches that are coming back it was hard for them to remember some of the things that The different rules that they have to apply out here on the court Yeah, you have to stop and think about it because there were a lot of little rules that you don’t use now But it was fun when these coaches were talking about it before the game They are all smiles and oh, yeah, it’s gonna be fun. But you look at them now on the bench There’s serious spaces. These coaches are out to win, you know, they’re very used to Playing competitive basketball so it you know, it’s fun and it’s an exhibition. They’re still strategizing over there we are watching an exhibition here between Dowling Catholic and Ankeny Centennial a sixth player exhibition game as We are at the half of the class 1a state championship game between newell-fonda and West Hancock the Mustangs lead at 44 to 31 and what a way to cap off the celebration of the 100th tournament of girls basketball here in the state of Iowa As this one is just about done for the exhibition But pretty well thought out the participation you got from the players wanting to learn the game as well Outside of a gym class they’ve really came out here and competed they have yet to give credit to the coaches They’re very passionate about this as well your dick rasmusson Wetzel you know those guys they’re legends in the six ounces six games And you know the Hansons they’ve won a lot of basketballs They’ve played a lot of basketball and it’s neat to see that this is still near dear to their heart as well Well Lisa, we thank you so much We will now send it back to Paul Yeager Who’s standing by? All right. Thank you very much. BJ and Lisa and I saw Lisa that night in 1993 at that state title game and that was an exciting thing at Jean Berner burger the executive director of the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union you were busy watching that and you wanted to see how it went the thing I noticed the most Jean was the silence of the arena. Everybody was watching everybody’s watching it I I won’t be surprised if you get calls about why you didn’t show the six on six championship You know, it’s something you touch on the history with you know, Bob and Sharon Hanson and Dick rasmusson I mean just those two alone all the games that they have won. I know Scott de young was down there He is coached and brought a team To state and six on six the connection in history Since you’ve taken over you’ve really tried it and now it just culminates in a 100 party Well, it’s been a fabulous tournament, but first and foremost, it’s because we’ve had fabulous games So but there’s nothing more important to the girls Union than the iowa girl And we want to showcase her at every tournament we have and you know you started on Monday morning Yes, we might have had the coldest tournament ever but we we got all the teams here We had to make a little adjustment here and there it’ll just add to the lore of what 100 was Well, you know it’s interesting because the tractor had picked up the rest of a Lincoln Central right for most of our history the Towns were in farming communities, so it brought us back very quickly to our origins All right So the Iowa girl is in the spotlight You know people tell talk to us both during the week and just say it is so fun It is absolutely about the every guest that we’ve talked to this week have said all of these little things that you’ve done You want to reveal some of the things that you give these girls when they walk in? Well It got pink water bottles this year, but probably the real special one this year. Paul was out charm bracelet so in the 40s and 50s even Montezuma talked about it every girl got a charm bracelet like a basketball charm with the year of this of the state championship that They played in so this year every girl got a basketball charm and an engraved charm that talked about the hundredth basketball tournament Just a connection and a reminder to our special pests And you also connected with some of the folks that the livet the oldest living Six-on-six player we need to discuss you had some of them here tonight. Well, I thought I would find one I got on Van and Bonnie. How’s that for demographics? a hundred and twenty five calls later We decided to invite everybody 90 or older and we actually had almost 30 former players who were able to come back and be honored and They were fabulous fabulous that the oldest living Iowa girls were wonderful and it was a pretty good week and you’ve had Incredible games all throughout the week credible games are so amazing. All right, appreciate all your time I know my wife enjoyed it. She played six on six my mother enjoyed it She played the game and everybody in between has had a great time tonight. Thank you for being here to partner I thank you very much, Jean and as Jean Berger head of the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union And we were talking about these great games Well, how about we just show you the highlights of this one in class 1a we will get back to five player basketball Left Kennedy Kelley. She had seven points on the shoot and the drive and Their West Hancock has been able to keep it close But it’s been really hard in players like Olivia Larson keep doing that. Larson was just on fire. She scored Three of her team’s first four buckets and just kept going The biggest lead was 14 for newell-fonda but West Hancock has cut that a little bit but it’s a little Back farther away the head coach at West Hancock. Paul soleus is with us in coach Longer half times. He had a little more time to adjust what you talked about first talked about offensive rebounding where we’re getting hurt really bad right now this game would be a lot closer if we had the offensive rebounding and the other thing that’s been kind of our Forte a little bit once was hitting some threes at timely position possessions and Maddy iseman has not done a very good job tonight for us hitting threes and she’s been bought one of our best 3-point shooters when Rachel Leer continues to drive and slash and cut and pass as best she can but you’re right. She’s probably gonna need a little help Yep, how do you get her involved in all of that? I guess in a little bit. We just gotta quit doing All right off. That’s the play who scored 31 points So you just have to find a way to get in there and keep going. Alright, appreciate your time coach. Thank thank you Alright, so that’s Paul Sonia’s head coach at West Hancock He’s gonna walk across the court and I’m gonna throw back down to the court with BJ Schaben Thanks, Paul first half statistics You see the bilbo numbers? Of course the turnovers seven by West Hancock and of course the rebounding newell-fonda owning the offensive glass Starting five onto the floor for newell-fonda Olivia and ll arson Megan Varennes Cameron Wilkin and Emma Stewart for West Hancock Rachel Lear Madison, iseman mihaela Faust Riley Hiscox and Amanda Chizik So the Eagles to work here Down by 13. Here’s Lehrer on the drive can’t get at the ball And this is going to go off of cheese ik out of bounds First thing that they do coming out, it’s timeout dribble drive try to get inside. Maybe get a little contact now We’re seeing a little bit of different look defensively from West Hancock Three-quarter court trap as they trying to slap it on newell-fonda And this will stay with the Mustangs And this is how you slow them down a little bit you show them a little bit different defense Make them back up a little bit and make them work in the half court With Laura Leonard BJ Schaben here from Wells Fargo Arena you are watching The girls state basketball tournament here on Iowa Public Television celebrating 50 years of broadcasting excellence as this 17 footer goes off and here come the Eagles for the moment, but turn right back around Olivia Larson and she’ll be fouled I’m Madison Iseman When there’s a turnover newell-fonda just turns around and starts playing defense right away And you saw that Larson who saw that and jumped the passing lane was able to get it back in their possession In the paint this one’s going to be taken away by Iseman She’s caught up in backcourt now will try to lob it ahead And this is going to stay with West Hancock. I Said before You can’t see them you can’t here. This is what our coach always told us. We but you can’t see him You can’t hear them, but they’re always there on that pressure defense. You have to step to every pass Gonna be called against Megan Lorentz, you know newell-fonda Throws a lot of players at you and they attack attack attack Coach Nick junker said that’s a part of his, you know, their overall philosophy The fouls may mount up but they’ve got more players in reserve You got a lot of bodies you get a lot of fouls to give over there on the bench So you can’t afford to be aggressive because you have that second wave and that third wave that can come in and play defense We’d still at 13 Can’t get at the fall but an offensive rebound here for the Eagles They’d like to capitalize on this one that was one of the things that your coach talked about was the offensive boards They haven’t been going to the offensive glass They’ve been giving up too many offensive rebounds not able to cash in on that offensive board Last year newell-fonda got here to the state championship game They took on a senior Laden team from Springville the Orioles cruise to the championship their second straight New champion this year and right now at Meghan Varennes and company have things cookin Severs will dump it on into Moran Britta’s back-to-back, and that’s again That’s what the pressure does that get the steal and then they feel lanes and they get the high percentage shot 17 point lead Xisa cat the high post Here’s leer Reverse lay-up can’t get it to fall Boy, what a nice move though just tiptoes to baseline side went to the other side of the rim could not get it to go Murr ends on the drive can’t get it to fall chick with the rebound When newell-fonda, ‘s hands are in every passing lane And every dribble you’ve got to protect get the arm out and protect the dribble Wes Hancock is gonna call quick timeout. They need to talk about this thing and make some adjustments before it gets out of hand I think what Coach Sonia is talking to his team about Well, well, let’s hear what he’s talking to his team about right now You have tried over to what school first half you’re just going by people, why are you slowing down on set now? You’re not ready to shoot either I’m going to start putting other girls right now it’s going to start happening I’m tired of seeing girls Let’s go a 17-point newell-fonda lead You know, that’s just trying to get your team fired up and and Really get him going get him focused in on what they need to do and he’s right they missed Chizik on the roll She was wide open. They did not get her the ball. They’ve got to have the eyes up They’ve got to be ready to look inside and she did a good job in the first half of getting the ball She was the equalizer for West Hancock. They need to try to get her a few more touches And this is going to stay with West Hancock So Kelly will put it in play And that’s going to be lost out of bounds last touched by West and God We said it at the outset of the broadcast West Hancock has not faced a team that has gone full-court pressure Throughout the season and the speed of newell-fonda Is very evident in this one now a steal by Lear But quickly newell-fonda gets back oh my and this is going to be tied up alternate possession will give it to the Mustangs Even though you will find that turns it over they hustle back. They don’t hang their head They get back try to get the hands into the passing lane Or try to pick the pocket of the dribbler and that’s exactly what happened You get that ball and you’re dribbling for a layup. You’ve got to push it out in front of you You’ve got to protect it with your body There’s Larson the paint too strong rebound will be tracked down by Lear Now ahead Jesus lost the handle on it and it will go back to newell-fonda Well, they want to run cuz that’s what they do, but you got to run at a controlled pace West Hancock shooting just 37 percent of the field 18 percent from three-point range Larson on the drive can’t get at the fall tease it with the rebound and it will give it to West Hancock Tenth rebound cheese ik She has had 17 rebounds in the semi-final. She had 13 rebounds in the quarterfinals and She needed eight in this ballgame To break a tournament record for 1a as far as total rebounds And a foul gonna be here called against Maci severs her second Second team foul here of the late half against newell-fonda Mustangs will come back into the game with Emma Stewart and Ashley Archer Also in for the first time is going to be Leia Aitchison For West Hancock her first action of the game And it turn over here by the Eagles You know iseman wasn’t even looking for that path you Got to have your eyes up ready when you’re making a cut you have to be ready have those hands ready? Now the dump down to Larson Olivia with the right hand will draw contact 349 To play here in the third quarter and Olivia Larson will go back to the free throw line She just does a great job of putting the ball on the floor finding the angle giving that his shoulders to get around the defense You mentioned going to be heading the morningside 15 points so far and missed both free throws there and this is going to stay with newell-fonda They’ve had a tough time even getting the rebound on the missed free throws Now the LOB to no one in particular, but it’s good to be tracked down by newell-fonda Walker, but she’ll turn it over to Lear Now the three Now two of 12 and 3 point Rangers West Hancock They have just really struggled getting anything in any kind of rhythm to go offensively Larson with the crossover and the spin now the three ball by Stewart Here’s a three And this is stay with West Hancock Great hustle by iseman able to follow that and then knock it off at Stewart to keep the possession the West Hancock Laer for 3-way it has been a tough night tonight from downtown Mustangs out ahead. Here’s Archer great lead pass and assist for Olivia Larson the Lead at 19 They’re always looking up the floor to see who’s ahead or behind the defense and that one they got it easy buck They’re gonna get another one here And the rebound Down to Kennedy now too cheesy a lot of contact and it’s gonna be last touched by rusty on Chyzyk and Stewart going up for that ball They collide midair ball goes up cheesy and others frustration for Cosette She was going high to get that thought there was some contact didn’t get the call. They have to go back and play defense So here’s Maisie severs and a foul called away from the ball an illegal screen called against the Mustangs And the Eagles will check on the Stewart back end she’ll come in for teasing Celeste Hancock Some of the work here their loan loss of the year was to Osage here’s leer on the drive and finish So you gotta like that. Just kept a rise up Worked her way through the deep has found the angles got all the way to the rim and a charge will be called against Larson that Where’s the one that made the bucket on this hustles back get some defensive position able to draw the charge on Larson Will come back in for Larson Can you see the pressure wait for the ball to get in and then the double-team leer Can’t get out of it severs with the steal. It’s loose the scrum And the possession arrow will keep it with new. LaFonda They’re like sharks. The mustangs are here tonight They are hands moving all the time and it is so frustrating I know it’s so frustrating for West Hancock to try to be able to get a clean look even to get a cleat with offensive possession They haven’t had one tonight where they’ve been able to move the ball around the defense to get a good clean. Look at though And here’s the dump down to severs finds an open teammate in the layup is there Bailey severs was hanging out And macey able to connect and now another steal by newell-fonda And this is gonna be launched at about and we’ll go to West Hancock I Just I think maybe rares up that Mustang defense We get the steel you get the bucket off the steel and then you get another steel and it just fires you and It’s another steel This is 19 turnovers in the game and now is filled by Iseman and the layup is their Little taste of their own medicine just shooting the passing lane. Good job by iseman to read that react and get the easy to Olivia Larson told us this week She really wanted this team to be the one that everyone wants to watch but not play And I can see why a Good definition of this team because they are relentless Like you said, they’re like sharks in the water when there’s blood they just keep feeding off one another they feed off the steals they feed off the turnovers a timeout taken here by West Hancock, let’s go to the Mustang huddle to here at dick Jungers who’s talking to his team about right now Now offensively okay, they’re really spread out we’re getting great looks inside keep doing that keep doing that move that ball Keep you stretched out this way in that way. Okay, so everybody saying that now Their ball yet, right? Yes. Okay. Keep it up. Everybody need a breather. You guys got this. Let’s keep it going Keep it going. There we go team on three one, two three Newell-fonda with 12 steals here so far 4c 19 turnovers 52:35 Olivia Larson leading the way from the final with 15 nobody else in double figures 15 for rachel lierz to lead West Hancock As this class 1a state championship After they lost the game last year to Springville in the title contest You just had the feeling newell-fonda was going to be in the gym a lot over the next 365 days and they look like a team that has never stopped thinking about that loss as the layup is there by Megan Varennes When you look up and down this lineup for newell-fonda, they’ve got a lot of players coming back next year You can see the same kind of beat from this team And of course they opened up against Springville Deposited them and then went through Marquette Catholic On their way here to this championship game got a little revenge In that first round game after they lost a championship to them a year ago Maggie Walker The rims are being very kind to newell-fonda here that are getting the bounces off the rim and everything was falling in I Said to somebody the other night I said what playing newell-fonda is they not only wear you out? Physically, but they wear you out mentally and you are just worn out by the time the game is over because they just keep coming At you and hounding and hounding Leer on the drive and finish great job by Lear to be able to drive right through the defense and attack Need to have a little bit more of that Go through but it did not and newell-fonda has a 20-point lead going into the final eight minutes Enjoying Iowa Public televisions coverage of the 2019 girls high school championships will let us know by making a pledge at IPTV friends org slash donate choose from a variety of thank-you gifts including the more than a Game DVD from the 606 two full-court press book and IPTV sports stadium cushion plus much more all pledges of $60 and above will receive two tickets to the Iowa Hall of prize take pride in your statewide Network Donate today Where are these two from as we look at the old state maps? Yeah, that was a classic at Betts auditorium Newell-fonda about 145 miles away from Des Moines and then of course West Hancock Town of brick about 120 miles away Here from Des Moines to Northern Iowa teams Battling it out here in 1a and right now newell-fonda with a 20-point lead West Hancock trying to figure out how to Follow closer in this one in the final eight minutes here. They’ve met were trailed here at the state tournament and Generally on the season. I’ve only allowed their opponents to score about 52 a game Actually 40 a game during the regular season in just 52 here at the state tournament Come out of this timeout and you think let’s win the quarter Let’s do whatever kind of damage we can do here in the foot to try to get back into this thing It’s a tough hill to climb But you’ve got the weapons to be able to do it You just have gotta get focused get into the mindset that you’re gonna win this quarter and get back into this ballgame We’re lost it off to the foot of a player It’s picked up by the Eagles Now the dump-down teasing Few more opportunities like that get the ball in the cheese X hands get it down low in the block and let her work cheese dick now with 8 points 11 rebounds This shot swatted away And the Eagles are looking to run And a foul gonna be called here on the Mustangs Well, that’s what they need to do get out run Like the fact that she’s extorting one end Got back down played defense got the block and then turned and hustled To get to the other end to get trying to get another opportunity to score And if charge will be called against we’re While you go into attack mode the slides over and Larson right there stood her ground Now the kick to the corner Here’s Larson and she’ll be hand check cut at the foul line. That’s going to be the fifth team foul Called against West Hancock Kennedy. Kelly will pick up her third. Alright Baker caught in his Cox with the foul her first In the layout from Bailey severs I’m not sure how many times Bailey severs is just hung around in the low block called for the basketball They’ve been able to find her nobody around her six points tonight Lear Leia Some nice things out of leader she’s doing a good job of Taking the ball in her hands and and just working her way through the defense Now the three by Larson And the putback not there And West Hancock will get fouled here by Riley Hiscox That is going to be the sixth team foul against teal Fonda Once the shot goes up if it’s missed by newell-fonda Everybody hangs around and they try to stay and play beef and so they’re playing in line two in line defense and You have to be aware that they’re right there If you put the ball on the floor, they’re gonna try to come in and pick your pocket Now leer in backward avoids the double-team Leer shoots In and out then put back there by cheezer’s Not have too many of those opportunities for choosing to get the putback and the easy to Now the dump down Maisie severs great pass from Ella Larson up top That’s just precision passing on this newell-fonda team. They swing it back up top a little diagonal pass down low to the block Teasing West Hancock showing some fight down the stretch here and you can see glimpses of what West Hancock does with her Makeup is they like to run they like to gun but they haven’t seen this kind of decent so they have not been able to get their running game going and A layup thereby Maroons who’s now in double figures. Here’s the thing about West Hancock. No seniors on this the players that get into the game, so They’re gonna be back. You would figure for next year have a very good team. In fact this one Megan mer Anton there’s three seniors that play for newell-fonda As it’s a 20-point lead here for the Mustang Say that these two teams will be right back here next year and that’s how you run the break couple of dribbles a pass Fill the lanes and they just do it So well, they’re just so well, it’s just like a well-oiled machine the way they get up and down the floor Brens now with 15 points also in double figures Maisie severs with 11 The three Kelly lost the handle And that mod gets right in Kelly’s hands as discount now this game is gone And she couldn’t pulled it or pull it in to maintain position and get the putback just was off of her hands out of bounds Now right at the top driving it in Firenze 17 in the game Three Mustangs and double figures Kelly with the kick-out Lear shoots scores Really good ball rotation in time the West Hancock take it in kick it out swinging around to the top two here for a three-pointer 69 48 Mustangs trying to win another championship Let’s go to their huddle Penetrate kick them out now Defensively, we’re gonna go one up. Okay one up. Maci goes fast up the sidelines bring the long jump Okay, if otherwise just keep her in front, okay, so I can see she’s putting her head down Just going just gear to the side keep her out of the middle. Okay now defense we make sure we’re getting 4:35 boxed out. Okay. Okay, so offensively next time it’s not a transition situation. Okay, let’s run Let’s run up. Let’s go out too high. Just a straight up too high Okay, everybody stand that now if they overplay slip screen, there we go First thing let’s finish this thing team on three one, two three 948 are soar To HIGH mustangs looked up if it runs some clock here run a little bit of offense down the stretch Well the other thing they want to do is Get bleared to the side. She’s putting her head down. She’s taking it right at the defense They want to push her to the sidelines. They don’t want to allow her to go to the middle. So look for that defensive adjustment And Larson Gonna be bumped out of balance and pounds will pick up the foul And the rebound to cheese In the quarter – the two teams been even rhinos 11, here’s cheese ik Cake head as the fall gets her own rebound and putback if there She is like doing a great job finishing through contact didn’t get it to go the first time Able to pull the offensive board and make a nice turnaround jumper off the glass Larsen the kick-out good ball movement. That’s aren’t you from 15? And this is gonna stay with newell-fonda Back to the bench Elle Larson will come back in And for West Hancock Riley Hiscox back in Newell-fonda Won the state championship back in 2015 Looks like they might earn a little clock here Barson de mer ends in the corner. Yeah, they’re gonna try to milk it a little bit And last touched by newell-fonda Emma Stewart will come back in for Archer And Bailey severs will come back in here now for Maisie severs, you know, they get the turnover Because they’re not used to slowing things down. They’re usually used to attack And when they slow things down and they’re just a little out of sync Leer on the drive and a charge will be called against leer Taking one for the team was Ella Larson While they allow litter to get inside again and marcin dis guns over slides in such the takes a charge And it looks like West Hancock is gonna come with a complete line change here J Smith will be in the game – the first time Also back in is going to be Kennedy Kelly and horseman Also in is Carly Bruns and Aitchison is backed in Larson tries to find her teammate Here’s Moran’s can’t get the shot to fall agents in with the rebound and this is going to stay with newell-fonda Humor subs coming in for newell-fonda Gonna give everybody a chance to get on to the fourth state tournament always a memory Archer shy 13 feet away Got four in the game And it looks like a charge is going to be called Against West Hancock, what a state tournament we’ve had here This is the final championship game. It started last night in 5a West Des Moines Valley Coming from behind yet. Again. They knocked off southeast Polk in the 5a title game Centerpoint Urbana cruised in the 3a title game got things started today in 4a North Scott Survived and we mean that down the stretch against Marion the lady Lancers bring home yet another state championship And then of course Trainor, how about that another title for them headed to southwest, Iowa? As they were victorious in the – a field and here newell-fonda Running and gunning with the 10th our 20 point lead on West Hancock We led from the start as this jumpers off the mark And it will be a foul here on the Eagles called against enforcement You know Newell-fonda fans are certain to feel that they’re starting to stand up cheering for their team gonna get another wave of subs in For the mustangs here after these fries runs Larsen able to bury the free throw and here comes that bench Renewal Wanda Vago will be back into the game And of course Olivia Larson checking out after cashing in on that free throw will finish her career for the Mustangs Lots of hugs over there on that sideline very happy sideline for newell-fonda the state championship to bring home to northwest Iowa Aitchison will lose control of this as it’s turned back over and The Eagles dive a little deeper Coming in is going to be a lien for chugga Also Ana’s market his Cox and also Paige Kuja 70 to 250 newell-fonda. There’s Maci severs with the Jay And the putback not there and the layup not there for West Hancock Couple of good opportunities to try to score there with some of the subs get a chance to score at the state tournament couldn’t mark And the jumper put down by mer ends 74 to 50 newell-fonda Make it 76 to 50 newell-fonda Been averaging 75 here at the state tournament and here in the championship right on par That’s the line after the foul is going to be Bruns and newell-fonda will put in more players Taylor semen into the game also Annabelle cock Sophie Stewart And also into the game is going to be Paige Roberts So everybody who suited Will have played here in the class 1a state championship game. I Know there’s disappointment over on the west and cot bench. But just think of their future they don’t have any seniors on this team They had a really nice season they were gonna have the experience and you can see the disappointment on the faces over there But think of what they can build on from this going into next season, we’re gonna see them back here next year And much like newell-fonda motivation as brown as is able to put it through off the glass for two It’ll serve as that motivation during the offseason and maybe take those extra James Little offseason work a few camps work on fundamentals Figure out what you need to do better work with your coach work with your teammates And those are all the things that will help you going into next season What a tournament for the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union and what a season of Iowa high school basketball we hope Melora and I have enjoyed these championships. We sure hope you have too as well newell-fonda poised and ready And it’s a final 27 and oh is dual fonda as the mustangs come to Des Moines? And take down the competition Well, they came in on a mission They weren’t happy that they lost in the championship being a year ago. They knew what they wanted to do They set their sights coming back to the championship game Came back in here undefeated and they play a style of defense That is very hard to compete against West Hancock. Did the best they could Something that they have not seen over the course of the season it was tough to make adjustments in that short amount of time Winning the semifinals getting to the finals to try to make those adjustments and be ready for this pressure defense of newell-fonda Megan Moran’s leads away from newell-fonda with 1917 for Olivia Larson 13 scored by Maisie severs to pace newell-fonda West Hancock led by Rachel Lehrer who had a game-high 22 But how about a man at using 14 points 14 rebounds? For West Hancock.
