UND Hockey: Familiar Foe

August 29, 2019

GAME DAY IS JUST HOURS AWAY AS NORTH DAKOTA PREPARES TO TAKE ON CONFERENCE OPPONENT DENVER AT THE FROZEN FOUR … WE HAVE VALLEY NEWS LIVE SPORTS REPORTER ALEX EGAN IN TAMPA WITH THE TEAM THIS WEEK … HE HAS MORE ON …. HEY BETH, WE OFTEN THROW AROUND WORDS TO DESCRIBE GAMES, THAT MAYBE DON’T FIT WHAT IS ACTUALLY HAPPENING. IN THE MEDIA WE HAVE A TENDANCY TO OVER HYPE A CERTAIN GAME. THURSDAY’S GAME BETWEEN NORTH DAKOTA AND DENVER IS BILLED AS A RIVALRY … AND IT’S EXPECTED TO LIVE UP TO IT. IT’S TWO TEAMS WHO RESPECT EACH OTHER, BUT THEY CLEARLY AREN’T FANS OF ONE ANOTHER. GRANT ARNOLD, DENVER SR. FORWARD – “I THINK THIS COLLEGE HOCKEY GAME, EMBODIES EVERYTHING DIVISION I HOCKEY IS. I THINK THERE IS GREAT COACHING, THERE’S GREAT SPEED, THERE’S HIGHLIGHT REEL PLAYERS, THERE’S GREAT DEFENSE, GREAT GOALTENDING AND A GREAT RIVALRY.” ITS BEEN A RIVALRY THAT THE 11 NEW FRESHMAN ON NORTH DAKOTA’S ROSTER HAVE BEEN THRUST INTO, BUT EVEN FOR SOME OF THE OLDER GUYS ON THE TEAM, THEY KNOW ANY GAME AGAINST DU IS A BATTLE, BUT ON COLLEGE HOCKEY’S BIGGEST STAGE, IT RAMPS IT UP THAT MUCH MORE. GAGE AUSMUS, UND JR. DEFENSEMAN – “YOU KNOW OBVIOUSLY PLAYING THIS TEAM FIVE TIMES ALREADY, THIS WILL BE OUR SIXTH, WE’RE PRETTY FAMILIAR WITH WHAT THEY HAVE ON THEIR TEAM AND HOW THEY’RE GOING TO PLAY. IT’S OBVIOUS THEY HAVE SOME SKILLED PLAYERS UP FRONT AND ON THE BACK END AS WELL.” BRYN CHYZYK, UND SR. FORWARD – “WE DEFINITELY RESPECT THEM AS A TEAM. THEY’VE GOT A LOT OF SKILL UP FRONT, BUT WE’RE ALSO RESPECTING OUR ABILITY OVER HERE AND WE HAVE A LOT OF CONFIDENCE OF WHAT WE CAN DO AND WE’RE JUST GOING TO PLAY OUR GAME TOMORROW AND TAKE CARE OF BUSINESS.” THROUGHOUT THE 275 TIMES THE TEAMS HAVE MET, THERE HAVE BEEN UNFORGETTABLE MOMENTS. AUSMUS – “ONE OF MY GREAT MEMORIES OF DENVER AND THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH DAKOTA IS AT THE RAPLH. DENVER WAS IN TOWN AND I DON’T THINK COACH GWOZDECKY LIKED ONE OF THE CALLS AND HE STEPPED OUT ON THE ICE AND WALKED OUT THERE, YOU KNOW GOT THE FANS PRETTY RILED UP AND THAT’S JUST ONE OF THE MANY GREAT EXAMPLES IN OUR SERIES WHY ITS A GREAT RIVALRY.” IT DOESN’T APPEAR ITS JUST FORMER COACH GWOZDECKY WHO IS POKING AND PRODDING NORTH DAKOTA. DENVER HEAD COACH JIM MONGOMERY IS GETTING READY TO ADD HIS NAME TO THE HISTORY ROLLS, WHEN DICUSSING HIS TOP LINE, THE PACIFIC RIM LINE, VERSES UND’S CBS LINE. JIM MONTGOMERY, DENVER MEN’S HOCKEY HEAD COACH – “I’VE ALREADY TRIED TO PUBLICLY CHALLENGE COACH BERRY, LET’S GO HEAD TO HEAD CBS AGAINST PACIFIC RIM LINE. IT’D BE A HELL OF A SHOW BUT HE WANTS TO GO WITH HIS DEFENSIVE LINE AGAINST THEM. SO MAYBE HE’LL BITE HALFWAY THROUGH THE GAME.” THE WEATHER ON WEDNESDAY APPROACHED 90 DEGREES HERE IN TAMPA … BUT IT APPEARS THINGS ARE JUST HEATING UP INSIDE AMALIE ARENA … LIVE IN TAMPA AT THE FROZEN FOUR … ALEX EGAN … VALLEY NEWS LIVE SPORTS.>A GUANTLET BEING THROWN DOWN THERE BY DENVER … HOW ABOUT IT? MORE TOMORROW FROM TAMPA INCLUDING CATCHING UP WITH SOME NORTH DAKOTA FANS AND THAT SEMI-FINAL GAME COMING AT 7-30 ON ESPN 2.
